This week, Rex looked at passages from Mark 6 and John 6 to explore four misconceptions about Jesus that actually reveal more about human hearts than they do about Christ. To His hometown, Jesus was just a familiar carpenter, a view that allowed their unbelief to restrict His miracles. To a guilty King Herod, He was a terrifying, resurrected prophet. To the hungry crowds, He was merely a convenient food supplier they wanted to force into being king. And to the exhausted disciples, He was a terrifying ghost walking on the water. Rex highlighted that while each of these views contained a sliver of truth, they all tragically attempted to put the infinite Son of God into a safe, manageable box. When we reduce Jesus to just a good moral teacher or a cosmic vending machine, we limit His power in our lives. Instead of keeping our faith small or letting the mystery of God frighten us, Rex challenged us to draw close, embrace the full wonder of who Jesus is, and invite Him completely into our boat.

What Are Our Kids Learning?

On Sunday, the children learned about how God chose a new king for Israel. When the prophet Samuel went to find this new king, he assumed God would pick the oldest, tallest, or strongest brother. But we learned a beautiful truth: people look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart! God chose David, the youngest brother and a humble shepherd boy. We then saw David’s incredible faith in action when he faced Goliath, a giant Philistine warrior who was mocking God. While the rest of the Israelite army was terrified, David knew that the battle belonged to the Lord. Armed with just a sling, five stones, and the Spirit of God, young David bravely defeated Israel’s biggest enemy.

We talked about how this famous story isn’t just about how to face the “giant” problems in our lives; it points us straight to Jesus! Like David, Jesus was a humble and unlikely King who didn’t rely on worldly armor or weapons. While David’s great trust in God led him into a scary physical battle, Jesus’s perfect trust led Him all the way to the cross. Through His ultimate humility and sacrifice, Jesus defeated our very biggest enemies: sin, death, and Satan, once and for all!

Their memory verse is: ***“Know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s.” ***- 1 Samuel 17:47

Reflection

“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. The history of mankind will probably show that no people has ever risen above its religion, and man’s spiritual history will positively demonstrate that no religion has ever been greater than its idea of God. Worship is pure or base as the worshiper entertains high or low thoughts of God. For this reason the gravest question before the Church is always God Himself, and the most portentous fact about any man is not what he at a given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart conceives God to be like. We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God. This is true not only of the individual Christian, but of the company of Christians that composes the Church.”
